Schwab 1000 Index Fund
Figures last verified October 31, 2026
Tracks the Schwab 1000 Index — the 1,000 largest US companies, roughly the S&P 500 plus mid caps.
The Schwab 1000 is Chuck Schwab's 1991 answer to index licensing fees — decades before Fidelity's ZERO funds made the same move famous. One thousand largest US companies, which lands the portfolio between an S&P 500 fund and a total-market fund: all the giants plus the mid caps, missing only the small-cap tail.
It's a perfectly good core fund with a 30-year record of doing exactly what it says, though in 2026 it occupies an awkward middle seat: SWPPX is cheaper for large-cap purists and SWTSX is more complete for two extra basis points. Long-time holders in taxable accounts have no reason to move; new money usually picks one of its more famous neighbors.
