All-index target-date fund de-risking toward 2040, built from Schwab index funds and ETFs.

Schwab's Target Index series is the least famous of the big three all-index target-date lineups and arguably the friendliest: 0.08% — matching Vanguard, undercutting Fidelity's Freedom Index — with a $1 minimum that makes the 'I don't have enough to start' excuse extinct. The 2040 fund currently runs equity-heavy and walks down the standard glide path.

As with all of these series, the construction differences (Schwab uses some of its own ETFs inside, glide paths differ by a few percentage points at various ages) are real but minor, and the deciding factor is where your accounts live. The headline is that a saver at any of the three big retail brokerages can now own a complete, self-managing, all-index retirement portfolio for eight to twelve basis points. That sentence took fifty years of fee wars to become true.

Best for

One-fund retirement investing at Schwab with a $1 minimum.
